VGC supplied various categories of labour resources to the Costain Skanska joint venture (CSJV) for the Crossrail works at Bond Street station.

Our people at Bond St were led by labour managers Donatas Jausicas and Nick Wells. Roles included foremen, slinger signallers, crane supervisors, gangers, traffic marshals, storemen, dumper drivers and general operatives.

We supported CSJV with regular safety briefings to encourage everyone on site to be aware of hazards and look out for each other.

In November 2019 we arranged two presentations fitness by State of Mind Sport for all the operatives on the project, to increase awareness of mental wellbeing and suicide prevention.

Awards

We are proud to have achieved a series of safety and best practice awards on the project. We have achieved coveted Costain Blue status in 2016, 2017 and 2019.

In 2014 and 2015, Costain Skanska JV presented safety awards each month. VGC topped the sub-contractor HSQE league table seven times in 2014, and was presented with the ‘Contractor of the Year 2014’ award. After we topped the sub-contractor league table in every single month of 2015, we won the trophy for 2015.

About the project

When complete, over 220,000 passengers are expected to use the new Bond Street station giving access to the west end of London,  which is the UK’s busiest shopping district. Two new ticket halls, nine escalators and four new lifts are being constructed to handle the through-flow of passengers from the platforms 26 metres below street level.

The station overhaul will provide two additional escalators from the interchange level to the Jubilee line; a low-level interchange route between the Central and Jubilee lines, a new step-free entrance and ticket hall on Marylebone Lane, four new lifts, allowing step-free access to platforms on both Central and Jubilee lines, and a step-free route to Crossrail.

Crossrail will cut the journey times to the West End from many destinations, in some case reducing them by half. The Crossrail station at Bond St will enable far simpler journeys for passengers travelling into and across London.
