The Stourbridge Line in the West Midlands is a route that has seen consistently high passenger growth over recent years and now experiences significant overcrowding at peak times. The expansion of Birmingham City Centre and high traffic congestion in the area has increased the attractiveness of rail and the line is now being upgraded to cope with its increased use.

Atkins has been employed by Network Rail to deliver the resignalling scheme between Stourbridge and Hartlebury and VGC has been engaged by Atkins to undertake the civil engineering component of its work

VGC’s scope covers both design and construction and includes under track crossings, cable route works, signal and equipment building bases and upgrade of level crossings. Some of the foundation construction incorporates piling work. The contract has a challenging programme made more difficult by limited possession access.

VGC undertakes many similar contracts on the railway infrastructure and is delighted to be working with Atkins on this prestigious upgrade project.
