VGC supports Samaritans as our company’s chosen charity.
Samaritans helps people with challenges like stress, mental health, money or family difficulties: issues that can affect anyone, regardless of their background. Our aim is to raise funds for the charity, and also to increase awareness among our colleagues of the support that is offered to anyone who needs it.
Activities in 2017 included the VGC golf day – which raised over £1,200 – dress down days, a cake sale and the Colour Run. David McCracken is cycling 110 miles in September and invites sponsorship.
Samaritans support anyone struggling to cope with what life has thrown at them. Volunteers are available 24 hours a day:
- face-to-face (there are 201 branches in the UK and Ireland)
- by email to email@example.com
- telephone on 116 123. (This number is free to call and won’t show up on a phone bill.)

VGC staff raised over £12,700 for cancer charity Bloodwise
Staff supported Bloodwise (formerly Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research) from 2014 to 2016. We lost one of our colleagues to blood cancer during 2014, and staff voted to support Bloodwise in his memory.
2016 saw dress down (or up) days, a charity golf day at Pedham Place golf club, an Easter egg hunt, International Food day, Theresa’s charity haircut – which raised £711 – and a karaoke evening at the LNER social club.
In 2015 staff raised nearly £2,000 through dress down days, an Easter egg hunt, a fold day, charity fundraising week (including a ‘guess the baby’ photo competition) and a company race night.
