Alex Dalton, Buyer

Alex Dalton, Buyer

Alex joined VGC in 2011 as an assistant within the commercial department. He began studying for an NVQ Level 2 in Business and Administration, which he completed in 2012. After achieving his level 2, Alex began his level 3 apprenticeship.

In 2016, Alex began his new role as buyer, and is now part of the VGC Projects team. Within this role,  he deals with the day to day purchasing for all departments at VGC. This includes the purchasing of PPE, stationery, maintenance accessories, I.T consumables & software, and the material & plant hiring for the Projects department. On top of this, he assists the Accounts department with invoice queries and PPE stock controlling. All of this is done within a set budget and helps keep production moving forward for the company.

This year, Alex has begun his CIPS (Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply) Level 4 Diploma through the Apprenticeship Team. The course covers best practices in procurement and supply management as well as buyers’ rights and laws, negotiation skills, subcontracts, and more.

Alex said:

“I recently had my first lecture and really enjoyed it, and gained a lot of useful information already that I can apply to my role.”

After completion of the diploma program, Alex hopes to progress to the level 5 qualification in CIPS.

“Alex originally joined VGC in an administration role and within a short time found the challenge of working within Procurement enjoyable. His attributes such as eye for detail, determination and a keenness to learn have seen him develop smoothly into his current role of buyer.

I am very pleased Alex has chosen an academic route via CIPS where I am confident he will achieve his goals, further his career and continue to be an asset to VGC.”

Apprenticeships give people the chance to learn while they earn, and are part of the technical training element of the VGC Academy programme. As a member of the 5% Club, VGC commits to having at least five percent of our people in apprenticeships but regularly exceeds this number.
