Jason WaringJason completed his NVQ level 2 Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services in May 2018.

He joined VGC’s team at Hinkley Point in March 2017 as a groundworker.

“When I came to work on HPC, although I already held some NVQ qualifications I heard that the project were actively promoting upskilling. I spoke with VGC and they offered me the chance to enhance my current skills by enrolling in their apprentice program. I saw this as a great opportunity to develop myself and to hopefully further my career. VGC has been really helpful in arranging all the additional courses I needed.

“Having successfully completed my first year I am now working as a ganger and VGC has invested in the extra qualifications required.

“VGC has been really proactive on HPC to promote the apprenticeship opportunities, and encourage people to take the chance to gain a recognised qualification.”

VGC has also invested in site safety supervisor training (SSSTS) and and the ILM (N) leadership course for nuclear safety training for Jason.

“The apprentice route was a much better option for me than attending a college full time. It has allowed me to continue earning and I feel more comfortable in the work environment than in a classroom.

“Also this is such a great environment and an excellent project to gain valuable experience. I would certainly recommend an apprentice route to friends looking to start a career in this industry.”

[Learning and development manager] Simon [Clamp] has always been on hand to give advice and help when needed.”

Jason is now enrolled on an NVQ Occupational Works Supervisor level 3 diploma.
