VGC was key to creating the foundations for the overhead line masts for the first phase of the electrification in the north west of England.

Our teams constructed 160 piled foundation and concrete gravity bases along the route. All work was undertaken during possessions at night and weekends In order to maintain rail services throughout. VGC also operated the specialist train that delivered concrete to site.

We worked closely with Balfour Beatty and client Network Rail to implement a programme of continuous improvement. This kept costs down and improved overall delivery.

90 km of railway

The north west electrification project involves electrifying 90 single track kilometres of railway. Works include foundations, steelwork and wiring. There are also significant power distribution works and associated signalling, telecommunication and SCADA installation. The project forms part of Network Rail’s multi-billion pound programme to improve Britain’s railways.

Electrifying key railway routes will improve services for passengers. It will also help support economic growth across many of the UK’s cities and towns. It will mean faster, greener, quieter and more reliable journeys.
