Workforce development manager Martyn Price MBE is one of the judges in tomorrow’s Balfour Beatty Brathay Apprentice Challenge.

The national final presentations on Tuesday 8 September are the fifth round in the annual event.

Teams of Balfour Beatty apprentices across the UK took part in six months of regional heats, managed by team development charity Brathay Trust. These four challenges were designed to develop life-long career skills including leadership, teambuilding, communication and logistical planning. In addition, they promote messaging on the importance of apprenticeships for employers and young people.

The top four teams will deliver their presentations virtually to the judging panel. After the judging, one team will be named Balfour Beatty’s Apprentice Team of the Year 2020.

The finalists are:

  • Team 8 – Northern EDGE led by Alfie Oaten
  • Team 4 – EDGE of the Midlands led by Lauren Jones and Nadeera Khan
  • Team 6 – EMPOWERing the Mighty Midlands, led by Kyle McNeillie and Sophie Cutler
  • Team 16 – South ENERGYeers led by Caitlin Garry

To get to this stage, each team had to demonstrate effective teamwork and personal development. They also raised awareness of apprenticeships in their communities.

Martyn, who is chair of the Cross-Industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force, said: “I am very much looking forward to seeing the four presentations. The apprentices have all worked extremely hard, and those who have made it to the finals should be very proud of themselves. They succeeded under particularly challenging circumstances this year.”

The presentations for the national finals will include:

  • Introduction
  • How each member of the team contributed to the presentation
  • The team’s accomplishments and learning journey
  • A description of what the team accomplished in the first four challenges, including key learnings
  • Examples of how the team demonstrated the Balfour Beatty behaviours
  • Conclude with any recommendations for Balfour Beatty to sustain and grow apprenticeships in the future, and how as a team or individuals you can contribute

The six Balfour Beatty behaviours:

  • Execute – get the job done and done well
  • Edge – make the right decisions for Balfour Beatty
  • Excite – inspire others to outperform
  • Empower – provide clear targets and trust others to deliver
  • Empathise – listen, understand and adjust
