Before joining VGC Group, Thomas Geraty was unemployed and looking for an opportunity to move into a role where he could apply logical thinking and problem-solving skills in a practical setting.
With a long-standing interest in how organisations make decisions and how outcomes are shaped by data, Thomas saw the Data Analyst apprenticeship as a way to develop those skills while building a sustainable career.
“What interested me was understanding how things work from a logical point of view, and using data to understand how certain outcomes are reached.”
Thomas Geraty – Data Analyst Apprentice | VGC Group
Age: 25
From: Ruislip
Role: Data Analyst Apprentice
Location: Ruislip
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Data Analyst (18 months)
Why Thomas Applied for the Data Analyst Apprenticeship
Thomas was drawn to data analysis because of his interest in how businesses make decisions and how outcomes are shaped by information. He was particularly interested in understanding internal processes and the logic behind decision-making across different parts of a company.
That interest made analytics a natural fit, combining technical tools with structured problem-solving.
“I was interested in the logical reasons behind certain aspects of the company, such as decision-making and processes.”
What the Data Analyst Role Involves Day to Day
Thomas’ role involves working with data from across the business and presenting it in ways that support understanding and decision-making.
His day-to-day work includes:
- Compiling and analysing data from multiple sources
- Creating reports and dashboards in Power BI
- Making complex information easier to understand
Developing Practical Data and Reporting Skills
One of the aspects Thomas values most is the opportunity to work directly with analytical tools and platforms.
“I enjoy working with technical platforms such as Power Query and Power BI, and using problem-solving approaches to reach the right outcomes.”
Investigating patterns, trends and anomalies is a key part of his work, helping him answer data-driven questions that support decision-making across the organisation.
Learning Through a Data Analyst Apprenticeship
Alongside his Level 3 apprenticeship, Thomas is gaining hands-on experience that allows him to develop as an analyst while contributing meaningful work.
The balance between structured learning and practical application has been an important part of building confidence and capability in the role.
Career Goals and Future Development
Thomas is focused on continuing his development within analytics and has clear goals for the future.
“I want to keep developing as an analyst until I can contribute significantly to the direction of the company, looking at forecasting data and using AI rather than only tracking past performance.”
Advice for People Considering a Career in Data Analytics
Thomas encourages others to consider a career in analytics, particularly as data plays an increasingly important role across organisations.
“Analytics has become more necessary than ever. My advice would be to communicate properly with different parts of the company, and make sure you understand the data you work with, not just the technical skills of the role.”
