As part of the programme to replace the outdated Metropolitan Line rolling stock, it was necessary to modify the existing signalling system to make it compatible with the new air conditioned S type trains. In order to meet the date for the introduction of these new trains, London Underground obtained a temporary concession to simplify and accelerate the signalling modification works. VGC was engaged by London Underground to replace the equipment subject to temporary concessions, with a fully conforming permanent installation.
VGC’s scope involved the laying of compliant ten-core ribbed signalling cable and included the installation of 50 combined terminal blocks, cabling and route work including 28 cross track cable crossings. The location of the works at Preston Road and Northwick Park created a particular challenge being adjacent to Network Rail’s Chiltern Line. This involved further planning constraints and the requirement for additional safety controls to ensure that the work was carried out safely and efficiently. Most of the work was undertaken at night during London Underground’s engineering hours possessions when passenger services were not running.
VGC undertook all the planning, design, installation and testing of its works which were delivered on time and within budget. VGC is an accredited Principal Contractor on London Underground and is able to deliver a range of complex design, build and commission projects in this demanding environment
