Epsom station

Epsom station was originally built in the 19th century to serve the old London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. In 2010, after over 150 years, redevelopment of the site commenced involving extensive alterations and improvements to the whole area. As well as a new larger ticket office, the redevelopment also included a number of new shops, flats and a new hotel. During the work the station remained open as normal, with a temporary ticket office being built on the original station forecourt. In addition to redevelopment of the ticket hall the platform buildings and canopies were also completely refurbished.

VGC was engaged by Kier Infrastructure in 2010 to undertake a significant element of the work on the station itself. VGC’s scope included construction work close to the operational railway including trackside fencing, reroofing of the platform staircases and associated rainwater systems. Refurbishment work undertaken included fit-out of the station ticket hall, subway improvements and complete renovation of the passenger washrooms. This work included the fitting of doors and partitions, ceilings, tiling and other finishes including bespoke fixtures and fittings. VGC also carried out enabling works including the erection of hoardings to segregate the construction activities from passengers and railway staff.

Working in the proximity of an operational railway requires stringent control of the work being undertaken to ensure that the safety of the travelling public is not compromised. VGC has over 20 years experience in carrying out work in railway environments and holds all the necessary competencies and accreditation to undertake such work.
