Case Study: Kye Billingham-Belle

Before joining VGC, Kye Billingham-Belle was unemployed and seeking opportunities within the construction industry. A recommendation from a VGC employee led to an introduction to Resource and Compliance Specialist, Jade Harrison, who facilitated the opportunity to begin a career in formwork carpentry.

Kye had a previous interest in the construction industry, and is now actively involved in building shutters for bridges on the BBV HS2 project. Over the past 18 months, the cohort have been working towards achieving a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Formwork Carpentry, gaining hands-on experience and developing essential skills.

VGC has provided numerous training opportunities to support Kye’s development, including MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) training and harness training. These courses have been improved both safety awareness and technical capabilities on-site.

Looking ahead, Kye aspires to progress within the industry and eventually become a foreman, managing construction sites.

My advice to those considering an apprenticeship on BBV would be to definitely give it a try to see if it is for them. If you get an opportunity to do an apprenticeship, try to learn something new everyday, ask questions, understand different aspects of the project. I also think it’s really important to stay safe working on site as there is will be nothing on site that is more important than going back home to your family.
