Richard Wheeler, Head of HSQE, has achieved Chartered Manager (CMgr) status with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), earning the FCMI designation.
Richard was awarded fellowship status following the completion of bespoke management and leadership development programmes in the VGC Academy.
In 2023, VGC were awarded CITB funding to commission, develop & deliver additional training modules that would result in the alignment of our behavioural competency development programmes to the CMI Level 5 award.
Richard was part of the first cohort of VGC staff that participated in this programme. He attended the relevant workshops delivered by Onion People Development, and was supported in the completion of his assignments through regular feedback and one to one coaching.
Richard learned he had successfully achieved the Award in June 2024, and he opted to take the next step in attending a professional discussion to achieve Chartered Fellowship of the CMI. We are delighted to say that his fellowship has recently been confirmed.
About the qualification
The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) works with business and education to inspire people to become skilled, confident and successful managers and leaders. It is the only organisation that can award Chartered Manager status. Christine Collins of Onion People Development, who partners with VGC to design and deliver Academy courses, is an accredited centre for CMI qualifications. The CMI Level 5 Award – ‘Principles of Management and Leadership in an Organisational Context’ – is suited to middle, operations and departmental managers and looks at aspects such as strategy and communicating vision. Candidates must complete a 4,000 word assignment.
Key learning outcomes for the level 5 qualification:
- Understand factors which impact on an organisation’s internal environment
- Understand the application of management and leadership theories
- Understand the knowledge, skills and behaviours to be effective in a management and leadership role
Sponsorship
Richard’s participation in the CMI programme (and that of 4 others, who are still finalising their submissions) was sponsored by VGC, using a grant from the CITB Leadership and Management Development Fund. Aside from the CMI Awards, this grant has enabled VGC to schedule many other learning events over the past year, including our Academy core development and management programmes, some brand new soft skills workshops, and various professional qualifications for individual employees.
