At the Crossrail awards event on 29 March, apprentice James Berry was highly commended in the Apprenticeship Collaboration category.
“This is a great achievement,” said Chris Ryan, director of VGC Labour Solutions south. “James was successful out of over 650 apprentices across the project. Well done to him, and to Lewis Bennett who was also nominated.”
James is working as a formworker on Crossrail C512 Whitechapel station for client BBMV. “James is an extremely valuable part of the team at Crossrail Whitechapel station,” said his manager, Donatas Jausicas. “His maturity and focus are beyond his years, and he is appreciated by all his colleagues.”
Nick Wells, labour manager, who recruited James to join VGC, added “James is keen to learn and develop, and always does his very best. He’s a real team player: determined to support his colleagues, and committed to the principles of ‘Be safe’ and ‘Be right’.”
Lewis is working on Woolwich Box C530 for client Balfour Beatty. Lewis’s manager, Mark Beer, said “Lewis is a team player who likes to get involved with the task in hand. His foreman on the project emailed me to say how much potential he has.”
The Crossrail awards
The Apprenticeship awards were in the five categories of safety, inspiration, collaboration, integrity and respect.
The Crossrail awards recognised a range of people from across the project for their outstanding achievements. The event, at Troxy in London E1, included speeches by Crossrail CEO Andrew Wolstenholme and Sir Terry Morgan, Crossrail chairman, who started his career as an apprentice. Sir Terry also congratulated James and Lewis personally afterwards.
