NVQ apprenticeship successes at Hinkley Point

Congratulations to Scott McKay and Mike Jennings on successfully completing their apprenticeships at Hinkley Point power station.

They have gained Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Construction Operations which includes a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services.

Both of them are working for client Kier Bam JV on the deep dig at Hinkley Point C. Scott is a member of the concreting gang with the earthworks team, and Mike works on earthworks on the VRS safety system.

Labour manager Daniel Cooke presented Scott and Mike with their certificates on 21 November. He said: “It’s a pleasure to be awarding these certificates – which represent the culmination of a lot of hard work.

“Scott is an integral member of the team and always exceeds his daily duties. Michael is both very approachable and extremely dependable. I look forward to the next stage of their careers with VGC.”

Scott said: “I’ve worked in construction for a very long time but this is the first time I’ve had the chance to gain a qualification. I’m very grateful to VGC for their belief in my abilities: now I plan to gain my supervisor qualification.”

Michael said: “I really enjoyed the practical side of the course, but it’s a long time since I had to do formal learning so that was hard going at first. All the hard work has paid off with this recognised qualification.”

Simon Clamp, learning and development manager, supported the apprenticeships in conjunction with training organisation Arc Academy. He said: “They are both very experienced workers and fully deserve this recognition. I am confident that other members of the workforce will want to follow in their footsteps. I’ve enjoyed working with them and look forward to supporting them as they continue to develop their careers.”
