As part of improving Britain’s railways, Network Rail works to recover materials from redundant lines throughout the UK. VGC secured the contract to undertake this recovery work in the Nottingham area in 2011.
The work was carried out at two locations. At Clipstone conventional plant was used to recover and transport sleepers, fittings, rail and turnouts to central collection points along the rail corridor.
The rail recovery work at Denby required the use of road rail machines to handle and transport the materials. Particular care was needed in handling materials intended for re-use. All works were carried out with qualified track personnel under Network Rail rules and procedures.
The high price of scrap materials at the time the works were carried out increased the risk of theft and vandalism. Therefore we implemented strict security measures throughout. We successfully completed the works within the agreed contract period.
VGC has worked on Network Rail projects around the UK for many years.
Our competence management system ensures that all staff have up-to-date qualifications. And our teams on Crossrail Anglia have won a total of five Network Rail star awards. The star award programme recognises sites, work groups or compounds that have high levels of health, safety and environmental risk control. A site must gain at least 90% to achieve a star award.
