We have been making sure everything is in top condition on the streets of Windsor, ahead of the royal wedding on 19 May.
Our teams, led by graduate engineer Samuel Yick, have been responsible for ensuring that roads and pavements around the castle are in good order. The streets are expected to be crowded, with up to 100,000 people celebrating Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle.
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead awarded VolkerHighways a £5.5 million per year highways management and maintenance contract in February 2017. This was long before the royal engagement! The contract includes planned, reactive and emergency response maintenance, winter maintenance, gully cleansing and small highways schemes. As a trusted contractor, VGC has undertaken a number of contracts for VolkerHighways, of which this is perhaps the most high profile.
When the royal wedding was announced, planned maintenance around Windsor was brought forward.
The natural and artificial stone paving on all the routes to Windsor Castle has all been smoothed to avoid trip hazards. Junctions have been improved and traffic calming checked. We have renewed tactile paving at junctions to make sure people who are partially sighted stay safe. The aim is for the crowds to be able to move as comfortably and safely as possible around the town.
Samuel said: “We’re delighted to have played our part in the preparations for such a momentous occasion. We work in many different places, but we can’t say we often get to smooth the path for royalty!”
