VGC was awarded the contract to undertake structural repairs to the Balmoral Road railway bridge in early 2006.
Considerable enabling works were required including the installation of crash decking to protect the live railway, relocation of services and temporary footpath diversions. The existing bridge deck was demolished in order to expose the structural steel work below allowing the replacement of the steel buckle plates between the principal girders. Once this had been completed a new concrete cast in-situ bridge deck was constructed followed by deck waterproofing, installation of concrete kerbing, road surfacing, street lighting, parapets and road furniture. Further work included undertaking repairs to the brick abutments adjacent to the live railway.
This challenging contract was undertaken in close proximity to the public and the operational railway without any incidents involving the public or any train delays. The project demonstrates VGC’s capacity to successfully undertake major civil engineering construction works in a railway environment.
The Balmoral Road railway bridge spans the Great Eastern Main Line at Stratford, East London. Built in the 19th century, the bridge was closed to traffic due to its deteriorated condition and required extensive structural repairs to ensure its continued use.
