The project allowed the client to compare different installation methods for emergency refuge areas (ERA).
The test slab ERA was installed as a modular unit, instead of using more traditional methods.
We constructed the emergency refuge area at a site in Gloucestershire as a stand-alone test of the technique for Balfour Beatty Vinci JV.
Scope:
- Heavy lifting operations to install the precast ERA modular units
- Ancillary civils, signage and emergency telecommunications unit
- Associated earthworks and drainage.
Our contract included management and supervision, engineering, workforce and logistics.
The project was finished on time and to budget, with no accidents or incidents. The technique is expected to be used as part of the Highways England M4 junctions 3 – 12 smart motorway upgrade project.
