Bobby Hayre, who joined VGC as a graduate engineer, has been accepted as a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
After an interview with the ICE professional reviews panel, they recommended he be accepted as an engineering technician member of ICE. He can now use the letters Eng Tech (MICE) after his name.
“The interview with two senior engineers at ICE in London lasted about an hour,” he said. “I gave a presentation on the East Kent close-out – you can see one of my slides on the right.
“As part of the presentation, I described the process of putting in a UTX (under-track crossing). I explained why it’s a high-risk activity, with scheduled trains which have to go over the track during the possession. They also asked me about retaining walls, and about other elements of supervising the works, including documents and safety precautions.
“The test was rigorous and I was so grateful to Bob Webb, Jacques Kriel and Mike Condon for their help with a mock interview. They gave me advice on my presentation and really grilled me, so I felt well-prepared for the real thing.”
Bobby’s certificate will be presented at a ceremony in February 2017.
Bobby graduated from Portsmouth university with a first class honours degree B Eng(Hons) in construction engineering management. He joined VGC’s graduate programme in August 2014, starting mainly on the East Kent resignalling project and the Crossrail Anglia north-east spur. In 2015 he was promoted to site engineer.
His next step will be to apply for incorporated status.
