Auto-transformer feeder cable infrastructure

Ilford platform ATF
Costain
£2.2 million
East Anglia
Oct 2017
Sep 2018

VGC constructed the auto-transformer feeder (ATF) cable infrastructure as part of the electrification of the Crossrail Anglia route.

The works included ARCO and TTS route installation (wall, buried and surface) along the cess and a number of signalling location (LOC) suite installations.

The most technically challenging section was the buried ATF route through six station platforms plus the installation of 23 cable chambers.

VGC provided the subcontract works for sections

  • Rabbits Road to Ilford ATF installation
  • Ilford station ATF installation
  • Ilford to Seven Kings ATF installation
  • Seven Kings station ATF installation (and accompanying handrail)
  • Goodmayes station ATF installation
  • Gidea Park ATF installation

Normal train services were maintained throughout.

Seven Kings platform works
At Seven Kings station we are creating 30m of buried ATF route under platform 4 through major space constraints and large buried concrete obstacles

This project was a discrete part of our contract with client Costain for the northeast spur of Crossrail. We provided subcontract works for the eight-mile section of Crossrail Anglia from Manor Park, east London, to Gidea Park in Essex. The project involves track renewals, installing overhead line equipment, turn back facilities, and station improvements at eight stations along the route.

The Seven Kings ATF installation team was commended by Hochtief (principal contractor for the station upgrade) who noted the high standards and best practice of the temporary works.
