We installed surface water drainage and foul sewer pipes for this site on a former gas works at the National Grid London Power Tunnel Site at Armoury Way, Wandsworth.
The project included breaking out the existing 300mm thick concrete slab and installing 320m of 150mm and 225mm drainage pipe. We also constructed 13 inspection chambers.
After reinstating the concrete slab and full testing, the pipes were tied in to the existing Thames Water sewer.
The team successfully overcame significant challenges. These included dealing with contaminated ground, the presence of asbestos, and several uncharted ground obstructions and services.
Despite the obstacles encountered, the works were commissioned on time for the client’s handover date. The client’s quantity surveyor complimented Pat Duggan and Lavdrim Hafuzi on the quality of their work, and their collaborative safe attitude.
We used a precast manhole system with wide wall manhole rings to save time. This also meant concrete surrounds were not required, and reduced health, safety and environmental risks.
This drainage project marks the completion of London Power Tunnels civils works. The site has been handed to Balfour Beatty for cable pulling and commissioning of the project.
The London Power Tunnels project will create a new 32km electricity superhighway deep below the capital. This will help keep Londoners connected to safe and reliable electricity supplies. Started in 2011, the project is due to be fully operational in 2018.
