Health checks

VGC holds free, confidential medical checks at sites across the UK to encourage staff to take responsibility for their health.

Sessions are available to all VGC employees, who are invited to drop in whenever convenient during the day. A qualified nurse runs checks including:

• weight
• BMI – body mass index
• blood pressure
• cholesterol
• blood sugar

and the results are discussed in confidence, with relevant advice offered as appropriate.

Positive feedback includes a member of staff who took the results of his health check as a wake-up call. He changed his eating habits and joined a martial arts class to take exercise he enjoys. He reported to a staff meeting that as a result he lost two stone in six months.

VGC receives aggregated test result data which we are using to develop relevant health education campaigns.

The HSE and IOSH have issued guidance on occupational disease (pdf). They point out: “Managing workplace health helps employers to retain experienced and skilled workers, and it helps employees to maintain productive employment.”
