The project allowed the client to compare installation methods for emergency refuge areas. The test slab ERA was installed as a modular unit, instead of using more traditional methods.
The scope of the project included:
- Heavy lifting operations to install the precast ERA modular units
- Ancillary civils, signage and emergency telecommunications unit
- Associated earthworks and drainage

VGC constructed the emergency refuge area at a site in Gloucestershire as a stand-alone test of the technique.
Our contract included management and supervision, engineering, workforce and logistics.
