Ten workers who attended a key influencer introduction day last week were unanimous in their approval.
The day served as an introduction to the longer key influencer course. Richard Wheeler, HSQE manager, discussed how behavioural safety can be used to encourage positive change. The key influencer course trains workers to help their peers to be aware of safety, and helps them coach people in the safest behaviours.
“It’s not about nagging,” said Jason Donnelly, a foreman on the track installation for the Crossrail fit-out C610 contract with ATC. “It’s about encouraging people to think slightly differently about safety – not so much ‘You must’ as ‘What would happen if?’
“I’m really looking forward to the full course.”
“I’m glad I came on the training,” said Bereket Kidane. Bereket has worked on the Costain Skanska JV Crossrail Bond Street project since 2013. He has received two client awards, one for health and safety, and another for environmental awareness. “Safety is important to me, and I am very proud of VGC’s safety record on my site. The key influencer training will help me to promote the safety message with my colleagues and friends.”
Selected for the training
The ten were selected for the training by their supervisors, who recommended that they be promoted because of their work ethic and attitude to safety.
“Everyone passed today’s course with flying colours,” said Richard. “With the key influencers we already have at sites across the UK, plus the new people who are keen to join, we are well on track to meet our target of one key influencer for every 20 workers by the end of the year.”
Further key influencer introduction days are planned at other VGC offices over the summer, with the full course expected in the autumn.
